Check Deforestation Risk
Overview
Check Deforestation Risk is a standalone tool that assesses a single plot of land against forest-cover and protected-area data, without running a full risk assessment. Use it to pre-check a location, for example before committing to a supplier or a plot.
🟢 Why this matters. Deforestation-free production is the core of the EUDR, and it is judged against the geolocation of the plot of land. Article 9(1)(d) requires that geolocation, and this tool lets you test a plot's deforestation exposure directly against geospatial sources. See the consolidated EUDR text.
Before you start
- The plot's coordinates, or the ability to draw its boundary on the map.
- The commodity the plot produces, selected from the EUDR commodity list.
- Optionally, the supplier whose location you want to check, to pre-center the map.
Step by step
- (Optional) Select a supplier. This pre-centers the map on their location. You can also select one of their production locations.
- Select the commodity. Choose the EUDR commodity the plot produces from the commodity picker. The commodity is part of the check's input and is reflected in the result.
- Provide the geolocation using either tab:
- Draw on Map: click the polygon tool, click on the map to set boundary points, and double-click to close the plot. Drawing is polygon-based — the plot is always captured as a closed boundary. Use the delete button in the top-right corner of the map to remove a drawn plot and start over; the map keeps its current position and zoom.
- Enter Coordinates: enter at least three coordinate pairs, then add more with Add coordinate as needed.
- Select Run Deforestation Risk Check.
- Review the result. kolum assesses the plot against its geospatial sources and reports its deforestation risk.
Coordinate format
Coordinates are in decimal degrees (WGS84). Latitude ranges from -90 to 90 and longitude from -180 to 180. A plot outline requires at least 3 points. Out-of-range or non-numeric values are rejected with an inline validation message on the field, and the check cannot be run while any coordinate is invalid.
Understanding the result
The result opens with the overall deforestation-risk verdict for the plot, together with summary tiles showing the declared partner country (from the selected supplier, where one was chosen) and the plot country resolved from the geolocation itself, alongside the commodity you selected.
Below the verdict, Contextual risk signals lists the analytics sources in the order they are actually evaluated:
- EU Country Benchmarking — the resolved country and its risk tier under the EU country benchmarking system.
- WWF Deforestation Fronts — whether the plot falls within a recognised deforestation front.
- GFW Hansen data — satellite forest-cover change for the plot since the 31 December 2020 cut-off.
All three sources are always shown. A source that was evaluated shows what it found; if an earlier source already determined the verdict, the later source is shown as Not evaluated, with a note naming the step that settled the outcome. The accompanying reasoning narrates the basis of the verdict — the evaluated sources, the resolved country and commodity — so you can trace how the risk level was reached.
How this relates to the risk assessment
This is a quick, standalone check. The full Deforestation Risk criterion inside a risk assessment (Step 2) uses the same kind of geospatial evidence, drawn from the plot geolocation the supplier provides. Use this tool to sanity-check a plot outside of, or ahead of, that workflow. It does not create an assessment or a statement, and it does not apply or suggest mitigation measures — those are managed in Risk Mitigation Measures and applied during a risk assessment.
Tips
- Draw the plot as accurately as you can; a rough outline gives a rough result.
- Use the business-partner selector to jump straight to the right region rather than panning the map.
Troubleshooting
- Run Deforestation Risk Check is disabled. You need at least three valid coordinate pairs, or a closed plot drawn on the map, and a selected commodity. Check for inline validation messages on the coordinate fields.
- The result looks off for a tiny plot. Very small or rough outlines are less precise. Add more boundary points.
