Add Packaging Items

Overview

Every packaging unit you place on the EU market needs to exist as an item in the Packaging section before it can be classified and documented. You can add items one by one with Add Item, or bring in many at once with Upload packaging list.

Before you start

  • Collect your packaging portfolio: every unit you place on the market, including sales, grouped, transport, e-commerce, and service packaging.
  • Do not pre-filter by what you think is in scope. Items that are not packaging get that verdict in classification, which documents the conclusion.
  • Have distinguishing names ready, for example "Bottle crate, 20 x 0.5 L, returnable" rather than "Crate".

🟢 Why this matters. The item list is your claim about what you place on the market. A missing item is an undocumented packaging unit, and setup step 2 on Legal Background asks you to confirm explicitly when your list is complete, because only you can know. See Regulation (EU) 2025/40.

Add a single item

  1. In the Packaging list, click + Add Item in the top right.
  2. Name the item clearly and create it.
  3. The item opens on its six-step journey, starting with Classification. Classify it right away; an unclassified item has no verdict and stays at the start of the list.

Upload a packaging list

  1. Click Upload packaging list in the top right of the Packaging page.
  2. Prepare your list following the dialog's guidance and upload it.
  3. The items appear in the list, ready to be classified and completed one by one.

Use the upload when you onboard an existing portfolio; use Add Item for new packaging as it enters your assortment.

After you add items

  • Each item appears in the list with its compliance status, starting at Open.
  • Work each item through the six steps. The statuses in the list (Verdict, Substances, Compliance status) update as you go.
  • When your list is complete, confirm it with All items added in the Legal Background setup steps, which unblocks the fulfil-obligations step.

Tips

  • Name items so your colleagues can identify them without opening them: format, size, material, reusable or not.
  • Add new packaging when it is introduced, not when an audit approaches. The list is easiest to keep current continuously.

ℹ️ Regulatory context. The unit of compliance under PPWR is the packaging unit (Art. 3, Annex I). Each item you add here becomes one documented unit with its own classification, evidence, and declaration. See Regulation (EU) 2025/40.
